Nellie

The Magician's Nephew

Nellie is the Cabby’s wife, brought from their world into Narnia by Aslan’s call and named its first Queen alongside her husband. Her sudden arrival makes the Cabby’s earlier longing for his wife part of Narnia’s founding, and places an ordinary countrywoman at the beginning of its royal history.

Arrival in Narnia

Aslan’s call brings Nellie into the new world without the magic Rings that had carried other visitors between worlds. Polly recognizes her at once as the Cabby’s wife and sees the crossing as direct and effortless, comparing it to a bird flying to its nest. Nellie appears to have been interrupted in the middle of washing: her sleeves are rolled to her elbows, her apron is on, and soapsuds remain on her hands. The humble details of the scene distinguish her arrival from a formal entrance into royal life.

First Encounter with Aslan

Nellie initially thinks she must be dreaming, which explains why she does not hurry straight to her husband to ask what has happened. Looking at Aslan unsettles that certainty, but she is not shown as overcome by fear. Instead, she gives him a small half-curtsey, then goes to the Cabby, puts her hand in his, and looks around shyly. Her gestures carry her from bewilderment toward companionship: before she receives a title, she reunites with her husband.

Queen of Narnia

Aslan addresses Nellie and the Cabby together as his children and appoints them the first King and Queen of Narnia. The charge defines the practical work of their rule: they are to govern and name the creatures, do justice among them, and protect them from enemies. Aslan warns that enemies will arise and identifies an evil Witch in the world, so the new queenship begins not as ceremonial reward alone but as a responsibility within a threatened kingdom.

Marriage and Founding Role

Nellie’s arrival answers the Cabby’s earlier reflection that, if his wife were there, neither of them would want to return to London; he describes them both as country folk. Aslan’s call makes that shared attachment consequential, bringing the couple together in Narnia and appointing them joint rulers. Nellie’s first act beside her husband is simply to take his hand, while the appointment enlarges their partnership into a public duty: they are to rule together and safeguard the land and its creatures.
